"glorified address book" - sounds like LDAP to me ;-)
- Works well with varying info
- is a lot more sophisticated that anything you might roll yourself
- is commonly used for what you are looking to do
- lots of client libraries out there in various languages (&
accessible from most good mail applications)
http://www.openldap.org/ for the server
http://phpldapadmin.sourceforge.net for a web based admin client
Paschal.

Subject: [ILUG] Personal database?
What is the best way of setting up (and maintaining)
a database with information about 500 people,
with slightly varying info, eg sometimes pictures, sometimes not.
I suppose a sort of glorified address book.
I looked at vCards, but they seem a little constrained.
I'm thinking of a MySQL database with a home-grown PHP input application,
but I'd prefer something more sophisticated.
Any advice or suggestions gratefully received.
