It takes at least ten minutes, if not a lot longer, to update a fresh 
XP install.

Judging by the iptables logs of dropped packets which I used to 
gather /years/ ago (i stopped bothering, there was too much crud), 
you're pretty certain to be infected within a minute of connecting to 
the internet.

I.e. there's no way to avoid an XP box getting infected, if it isn't 
firewalled.

If that isn't Microsofts' fault...
