  | This sounds like a way to minimise donations..
  |
  | What motivation is there for anyone to donate via VIM rather than
  | directly to charities they wish to donate to??

perhaps not much? which is perhaps one reason the
donations are NOT sent to, or via, the VIM people,
but instead directly to the nominated charity (ICCF):

http://www.vim.org/iccf/ (or ‘:help iccf’ in vim(1),
                               per ‘vim’s start display.)

purchasing (at least one of) the VIM books automagically
 triggers a contribution:

   http://iccf-holland.org/click5.html

some other companies/products also donate to ICCF:

   http://iccf-holland.org/click.html

 I didn't check, but I presume the ICCF's financial
report provides data on the success (or not?) of
these various donation-raising activities, et al.,
albeit the report _may_ be in Dutch?:

   http://iccf-holland.org/jaar2006.pdf

finally, ‘:help kcc’ (in ‘vim’) briefly discusses
the effectiveness of KCC (the Ugandian project
funded by ICCF), and provides further references.

cheers!
