I'm actually considering it for my KFM project (a web-based file manager 
(kfm.verens.com)) - it would save a lot of problems where I'm providing 
support for bugs that I fixed ages ago.

Then again, I would worry that an auto-update may also cause problems. For 
example, there was a bug with Yum between FC5 and FC6, where the SQLite 
process would take up more and more RAM and swap until the machine was 
completely unresponsive. This made it very difficult to upgrade. Thankfully, 
it didn't actually break anything, but I'm very wary of writing anything which 
affects a file system (which a file manager naturally does!)

Maybe something simpler like how phpBB (yeah - model of security ;-) ) alerts 
the admin that there are upgrades available, but does not actually install them.
