I agree with this 100%. We started doing email for our customers in 2000
as a bit of a freebie. It was pretty much a case of setting up a mail
server and leaving it alone. Nowadays managing spam filters etc is
basically a full time job for one person. Google Apps or a similar
system is the way to go - I imagine they have whole teams of people
working on the the anti-spam stuff. I rarely get any spam in my gmail
inbox.
