OK the fact that there is one ? per character,
suggests that and iso-8859-15 encoding is getting
in the loop somewhere.

This is a local xterm on the system right?
What is the output from the `locale` command?

> ls > toto
> more toto gives "tété" as you would expect.
> The LANG is set to : "LANG=fr_FR.UTF-8"

This asymmetry is puzzling.
