Well on my linux desktop my brower also caches requests
(for 60s by default I think), and nscd also does I think,
and my wireless access point also caches.

I was worried about the latency of contacting a root server.
Also I'm not sure what processing is required for these servers
to do a lookup.

Why?

They do have a lot of control at the moment,
and they resolve google to their own servers,
but that's for benevolent reasons they say:
