I referred to the 5th amendment to the U.S. constitution (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fifth_Amendment_to_the_United_States_Constitution) 
  . Invoking one's right under this to not be "compelled in any  
criminal case to be a witness against himself" is commonly referred to  
as "taking the 5th" in (U.S.) popular culture.
