[ILUG] Blank screen on first and subsequent boots

Hi All, I have just migrated my main machine (pene) from Knoppix to Etch 
via DVD "[Debian GNU/Linux 4.0 r2 _Etch_ - Official i386 DVD Binary-1 
20080102-13:19]".


I tested it on my laptop an Acer 1800. Installed no problem, can talk to 
pene, added ftpd and telnetd so I can go both ways great.


Installed Etch on Pene has a ASUS A7V8X-X mother board with Radeon 9200 
PRO card to a Nokia 446Xpro. 1GB memory and 300GB ATA disk [hdd1 20GB 
swap hdd2 mounted on /.] I performed default load, setting root pwd, 
etc, it found my BB router and mirror at “mirror.ox.ac.uk”. The 
load/build completes OK.

+++ My Problem +++

I get a blank screen on first and subsequent boots. After a restart, I 
logged in as single user and setup ftpd and telnetd, so I can get inside 
the machine. I noted that my user (spirals) on pene has no “Desktop” 
directory. Under Knoppix I needed to add xmodule=vesa to get that to 
run, am uncertain if this will work with Etch. I found references 
(conflicting) regarding radionfb being damaged/bad/dud but nothing 
covering a blank screen on first boot.
