I distinctly remember yum installed by default in FC1, which was
released about a year before Ubuntu 4.10.
I tend to agree with Padraig. It's been my experience that the Ubuntu
developer majority are more concerned with adding new hotness to
ubuntu than fixing brokenness. As far as they're concerned, their
primary user is the home desktop user, and if it's not making
something shinier then they don't want to know.
