I guess "pile of shite" was a bit extreme. I just have a really low
opinion of Fedora as a complete distribution. I'm sure the individual
components of Fedora are quite quality. I just don't like the way it's
all put together, and organised.
I would furthermore argue that most of the quality of engineering that
came from Fedora would have made its way upstream, and eventually
found its way into Debian and Ubuntu.
I think the biggest strength Fedora has is a certain similarity
between it and RHEL. I furthermore think that RHEL's strongest defence
against Debian is it's corporate support which IT Managers seem to
like.

I've never encountered any marketing from Cannonical. I've only heard
about them through word-of-mouth, and reviews etc.
