Hello Bernhard,
Possibly because while Apache2 has proxy capabilities, this is not its
main duty. Squid is widely used as a reference for proxy, and this is
what it does at its best (almost).
The main advantage I see in using apache2 is that it will also proxy
IPv6 whereas Squid is just backwards in that area.
