Yes. A pop or SMTP server might be configured to ignore pings. A telnet
to the POP or SMTP port tells you if it alive.
On OpenWRT router, the Telnet only works at install time till you set
the root password. Don't connect someting to Internet till Telnet
disabled / Passwords set :-)
I might also telnet to an old print server box on the LAN or a remote
Serial Device Server Port, but not to a Workstation/Server console.
