That is not my experience.

I think a program like shorewall, which sets up iptables for you,
is far better for normal people. (Thank you God for making me normal.)

To me, editing iptables directly is a bit like editing sendmail.cf .
I have far more confidence that shorewall will get things right
than I have in my knowledge and ability with iptables.
