Sadly this is likely to be a visio diagram or some other embedded object
for which there is no direct support. With an OLE2 embedded object they
always have a preview image, and that's what is being displayed. Without
support for the original ole2 format then all you can do is fiddle with
that preview image. Typically the preview is a .wmf file.

Tools->options->load/save->microsoft office shows some toggles for
converting some embedded as ole2 formats into equivalent OOo formats. In
which case you get an editable object instead of just an unconnected
ole2 object with just the preview available but sadly these don't
include e.g. the visio format which I suspect the diagram is likely to
be. But might as well check all those "on" and reload the .doc in a
rather pathetic hope that you get lucky.

Also might as well log the document against qa.openoffice.org with a
mention that the diagrams preview is rendered all busted-up.
