I have mixed results with the nvidia driver depending on the OS and kernel
version I am using. On Ubuntu 7.04 the nvidia driver was fine, but it causes
random lockups on 7.10 - and I can dual boot between the two OS versions so
this is not a new hardware problem.

I believe Intel have open source drivers for a lot of their 3D chipsets

and IIRC ATI since bought by AMD have been working on OSS drivers - not too
sure how far advanced this is though.
