Nope. Binary drivers are notorious for this. Hence the tainted
flag in the kernel. Hint: the good kernel devs aren't working on
proprietary graphics drivers...
Just today I installed the binary ATI driver on a new Dell. It
seems to work fine but one particular dual head config locks
the box solid.

Intel have an open source driver and ATI/AMD have recently
released specs for a 2D driver with 3D to follow. If this works
out I imagine NVidia will be forced to follow suit.
