Just for another perspective on this issue, Bruce Schneier feels no
need for wireless encryption:

In case you haven't the time to read the link, his main security point
is that you should be encrypting all of your important traffic anyway,
so you are not really more secure with another layer of encryption on
top of that. Knowing anyone within range of your AP can grab all of
your packets tends to instil good security habits.
He also mentions altruism as one of his reasons; he is happy to let
people use his bandwidth, and has used neighbours' open networks a
couple of times when his ISP was having problems.
