Yes, it will pay for itself in the long term, but you probably won't
see any benefits in the three to four year window you own the machine.
Unless, of course, you pay a lot more for electricity than I expect,
or you are running quite a few green machines.
Of course, using less electricity definitely contributes to the
greater good, so we'd all thank you for that.
I think the best thing you can do environmentally regarding computers
is to make sure that your old gear is recycled or reused properly
(e.g. by Camera or another charity that redeploys old machines in the
developing world). An old PC in a landfill is a truly nasty thing.
This is getting a bit off the topic of your original question, but I'd
love to hear from other ILUGgers on environmentally responsible
computing.
