I can't help with Ubuntu-related questions. I use Fedora myself.
I'd recommend sticking with KDE3, though. KDE4 is simply not yet ready,
and I think it was extremely selfish and uncaring for the KDE team to
release such an unstable version as "4.0" or even "4.1" which you would
expect to be at least as good as KDE3.5. But let's not get into that...
(it's similar to Vista following XP. why release a piece of crap when
there's a perfectly usable version already out there?)
hard lockups can be hard to diagnose. In my own experience, they're
usually solved by compiling your own kernel and experimentally leaving
out bits and pieces until you find the culprit. In your case, it already
looks like it's APM that's causing the problem. You /might/ be able to
solve that one by compiling without APM (at the expense of battery life,
and the threat of overheating), or the problem might have already been
solved and an updated kernel might solve it.
