I think the reason widescreen has become popular is not just down to dvd 
widescreen movies, but due to OS sidebars which seem to be catching on. 
I don't mind the whole widescreen issue though as it gives me more hand 
resting room on my laptop. If you're seriously against them, get two 
monitors and use xrandr.
