if your IP is static then a VPN

if your Ip is dynamic then a service like dyndns.com and a VPN

openvpn is what I am using for this very job, it's very flexible,
secure, fairly easy to configure and works very well

http://openvpn.net/index.php/home.html

I have it set up to listen for udp and tcp connections, this allows me
to get my vpn up under (almost?) all condtions. (dodgy hotel internet
access, weird NAT etc.)

Selinux might be relevant, just set it for permissive and monitor for
any audit alerts, resolve same and set back to enforcing
