As far as I know the WEEE charge came in here before the UK, and Amazon
decided to stop shipping to Ireland based on the difficulty of dealing
with that law. As you note though, it's now transposed pretty much
everywhere in the EU, incl the UK, and they still sell in those countries.

Personally, given the rate of "lost" packages I've had in shipping
electronic goods and games by An Post, I have a different theory; I
suspect they'd had enough of dealing with returns and claims for lost
shipments, given a small volume of sales, and the WEEE stuff was just a
good excuse to cut us off.
it's a real shame. I got through $1000s of purchases through Amazon.com
when I lived in the US, where their service is sooo much better....
