HEAnet Network Systems Software Developer

HEAnet Ltd. seeks to appoint a Network Systems Software Developer, who will
develop software tools and systems for the monitoring, maintenance and
development of the high-speed national research and education network in
Ireland. We are looking for an experienced developer to work with the Network
Operations and Managed Network Services teams to deliver tools and systems
that will increase operational efficiency and enable us to deliver more
advanced services to our clients.

Duties:
The successful candidate will provide input at all levels of system
specification and design within HEAnet. He or she will:

    * Specify, design and build software systems used for monitoring of
network equipment and traffic.
    * Assist in the testing of these systems.
    * Configure, customise and integrate other appropriate software to
function within the existing frameworks in HEAnet
    * Liaise with the System Administrators within HEAnet to identify where
improvements or optimisations can be made through the development of software,
and ensure that any software developed is compatible with existing systems and
practices.
    * Provide documentation for all software developed and customised.
    * Assist with general specification and procurement of software tools,
systems and technologies in HEAnet as required.
    * Take part in the NOC duty roster.
    * Keep up to date with new technologies and software development
frameworks and methodologies, with a view to keeping HEAnet and the clients of
HEAnet advised as to what constitutes 'good practice.'
    * Perform other related duties, as required.
    * The successful candidate will report on a routine basis to the Network
Operations Manager in HEAnet.

Skills Required:

    * Applicant should have excellent knowledge of at least one scripting
language and should have good experience of others. (e.g. Perl, PHP, Python,
Ruby, etc.)
    * Good knowledge of delivering and debugging software using a LAMP (Linux,
Apache, MySQL, Perl/PHP) stack, or similar, essential.
    * Good knowledge of Subversion or similar SVCS (Software Version Control
System) essential.
    * Strong knowledge in XHTML/CSS would be expected.
    * Significant database experience with MySQL, PostgreSQL, Oracle or a
similar platform would be an advantage.
    * Experience writing or maintaining C/C++ or Java source code would be an
advantage.
    * Good knowledge of TCP/IP networking and network topologies and
architectures a distinct advantage.
    * AJAX and Javascript knowledge an advantage, but not essential.
    * Knowledge of ID and Federated Access Management an advantage, but not
essential.

Education/Certification(s):

    * Educated to degree level in Computer Science / Computer Engineering or
related discipline.
    * Minimum of 2 years experience in a commercial software development role.
    * Proven commitment to achieving deadlines and delivering high quality
software and documentation.
    * Experience of developing and maintaining software for high availability
& high throughput systems advantageous.
    * Experience of delivering Web Service type applications to tight
deadlines required
    * Experience of developing applications for TCP/IP network configuration
and/or monitoring ideal.
    * Good attention to detail.
    * Pragmatic approach to problem solving.
    * Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
    * Experience with SMTP, IMAP, LDAP, SSH, SSL, DNS and Shibboleth an advantage.
    * Experience with Switches, Routers, Firewalls and SNMP an advantage.
    * Experience of networking technologies such as Ethernet, DWDM, GMPLS and
UCLP an advantage but not essential.
    * Experience of use of, or contribution to, open source software projects
advantageous but not essential.

Location: The successful candidate will be based at HEAnet's office, 5
George's Dock, IFSC, Dublin 1.

Salary: Network Engineer / System Administrator band (dependent on experience
and qualifications).
