Nice try, but no cigar. DirectorySlash is on (which is the default) so  
a request for
/wp-admin will be rewritten automatically to /wp-admin/ which SHOULD  
get /wp-admin/index.php but for some reason (and this is the heart of  
the problem) doesn't.
