That could be caused by failing hardware, like bad
RAM, for example.

You might be interested in a tool called the
"Ultimate Boot CD".

You can boot from it, and use its many hardware
diagnostic utilities.

It's described at

    http://ubcd.sourceforge.net/

It found a bad CPU for me.
