[ILUG] Missing Terminal

Got a weird one here, maybe someone on the list can help me out.
A friend is running unbutu gutsy gibbon and for some reason cannot bring up
the gnome terminal, all he's getting is a green rectangular cursor that he
can type in but no commands are processed.
Does anyone know what could be the problem, google hasn't been any help.
