any laptop that's been out a while would be okay. I'm using a HP G6000 for example.

what you should probably do is go to the shop, bring a live-cd with you, and test the machine before you buy it.

make sure the laptop can be upgraded further with regards to RAM. mine has a limit of 2GB, which means running virtual 
machines (fully virtual; qemu and virtualbox for example) is a pain.
