You mentioned spam-checking and so it seems you somewhat equate SPF 
with anti-spam, to some degree. It seemed like, anyway - ICBW, etc.

If SPF isn't to prevent spam, what's the point of it? It's also 
useless at preventing joe-job back-scatter too - there are *much* 
better, unilaterally-deployable solutions that don't require 
upgrading the internet to be 100% effective.

SPF is the internet equivalent of phrenology - I'm amazed there are 
still people advising others to feel for bumps. ;)
