I use gdm because I have Ubuntu and that's the default.

In my /etc/rc3.d I have the following:

S30gdm -> ../init.d/gdm

Just change gdm to kdm and you should have it working.
(Assuming you have kdm installed at /etc/init.d/kdm, and runlevel 3 is your X
Window runlevel),

By default Debian clones use runlevel 2 for X. I set it to 3 and use 2 in case
I need a command prompt login. I always do this in Debian because setting it
up the first time can be problematic.

Red Hat/Fedora/Yellowdog use runlevel 5 for X and 3 for full non-X login.
