they offer a number of different downloads - .deb, .tar.gz2, .rpm, yum.

If you'd chosen the RPM, you could've installed it directly. The Yum, though is useful in that you can periodically do 
"yum upgrade" and your computer will check for upgrades for the various RPMs that are already installed.
