Yes, it has it's own PSU
mkfs is writing 7543 inode tables

no. I created an ext3 file system on a 1TB drive only a few weeks ago, 
and it just took a few minutes.

power problem? that's what I'd suggest for smaller drive where the drive 
itself was powered by USB. can't think what would affect a 1TB drive, 
though, which I presume has its own power supply.
