I couldn't be at all certain about this but I had heard that 3 Ireland have
two APNs

 3Ireland.ie:  not routable from outside
 3Internet:    routable from outside

As far as I understood it, the former is NATted so you /may/ see an RFC1918
IP address if you're on that.  That said, I think I've heard the former
referred to as "legacy" so it may not be around indefinitely.

At a very wild guess, lots of modern users will need to be routable for
"push" type services (Exchange?) to send data to the phone.

Perhaps a similar experiment could be done if someone's interested on the 3
network.
