[ILUG] Keyboard problems

My keyboard has stopped working under Gnome (Debian testing). It stopped
during a session this morning, and resists restarting gdm, rebooting,
even apt-get dist-upgrade. 

The keyboard works in console mode, and in X as far as entering username
and password, but once the gnome session starts, it is completely inert
(LEDs don't respond to Caps-Lock etc.). 

I can get a TWM session going, and that works, but makes me feel like
it's 1988 again.

What to look at?
