Hi Paul,
I did a project last year using Symbian C++, after a few months of bashing
my head against the wall with it, I switched to Java, and knocked out a
prototype in a day or two. Unless you have specific requirements that only
Symbian C++ can solve, I'd definitely recommend using Java instead.
Java apps are a little more sandboxed afaik, but the learning curve for the
Sybian C++ is akin to running into a brick wall. If you are really insistent
on using C++, I can point you in the direction of an ok book which could
help, but I'd still recommend Java.
