I presume you mean kill -TERM - or possibly using the provided shutdown
and restart method rather than using the kill command at all. For
clarity, the symptoms you're seeing re space being used by files held
open is normal behaviour and is not a fault. No reboot or fsck is
required (based on that alone.) Stopping and restarting the processes in
question should achieve the effect you require.
Also, I'd suggest you consider very seriously the integrity of your
data seeing as how you've now likely copied files that were open (and
thus possibly not updated.) You might want to consider restoring from
backup, or at the very least doing a serious integrity check on the
files. It's almost always a bad idea to copy files that are held open.
If you have clearcase serving out data from these copied files (on the
other partition) you may find data is missing or corrupted since it was
never flushed to disk on the first partition. Worth checking!
Make sure you have a good backup from just before you moved and deleted
those files. I'd also recommend you do this ASAP, informing the
application owners that the sooner this is done the less likely the risk
and impact of corruption to their repository.
Best regards,
-->Gar
