firewall disabled on the router, and iptables turned off on the laptop 
while I figure this out.

yup. I read through that as well. it's exactly what I did.

I'm trying a few different routers now. I've one of those Eircom Netgear 
ones, and a Buffalo AirStation. one of them /must/ work
