Because if you setup filesystem permissions which blocks the smb
process from reading or writing then none of your users will be able
to read or write to shares. The basic principal as I understand it is
that whatever user owns the smb process must have full privs on the
filestem that holds the shares and then you instruct samba on how to
refine access control as per its own internal list of users, but OS
and filesystem level permissions will totally overide and break the
samba setup if you use them.

Then again I that is just *my* understanding of it, others here will
quickly jump in if I'm off the mark!!
