True, X doesn't do well with high latencies.

The LBX extention that went in a while ago can help by protocol
compressing/redundancy removal (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lbx).

I think the Differential X Protocol Compressor (http://www.vigor.nu/dxpc/) 
is LBX's current successor/heir apparent.

I've used it successfully in the past, when I've needed to get a 
single app or terminal window remotely displayed, but didn't want the 
hassle of setting up VNC or RDP...
