Absolutely. With Linux clients and server, use NFS. Use NIS too with server supplied home directories, and you get hot desking thrown in. For the user reassurance part, you will have to login to get on to a workstation at all. If there's concern about people surfin on a temporarily unoccupied PC, set short timeouts for screen locking.
