Yeah, according to that, network manager was no longer involved since
I edited interfaces, and the problem re-occurred, and since no
neighbouring squeeze boxes were affected, I'm putting it down to
something funky in a lenny upgrade to squeeze, all the other boxes are
raw squeeze installs, and they are renewing their DHCP leases just
fine, but the bad boy looses ip and routes on renew.

I've just set it statically which sorts it for me, updating here for
the sake of web search completeness.
