yep, this is because glibc is below most other things in the system
ans also it gave you the option to install a pentium optimised
version (i686).

fine, only the RPM headers are downloaded at this stage.

where? It deletes RPM files (by default) after installation.
With up2date you just select the packages you
want to update, click "go" and have a cup of tea.
There should be no need to look for any RPM files

Hmm, right I'm guessing up2date tried to update your kernel
and you rebooted while it was doing it?
