I've just been reading through:

http://www.ucd.ie/hostmaster/policyguide.html

And I must I'm really shocked at what passes for 'policy' with the IEDR. I
mean come on - if you're just a normal irish citizen who wants a site,
you're basically screwed if you want one other than some mangled version of
your 'Personal Name'.

How is this fair? Why on earth should I have to form some sort of limited
company just to get a decent domain name in my own country? I'm not
advocating some sort of free-for-all, but for gods sake - every part of damn
their 'policy' is explicitly designed to STOP ordinary people getting a
domain.

Oh and I see politicians get in fine, as do corporates, trade marks, state
agencies and publications. I see schools get shafted because there are so
many with the same name and noone has thought of breaking the namespace in
.ie down by geographic location or anything else sensible. How many domain
names like stmaryscork.ie, stmarysgalway.ie etc are we going to have before
people cop on that perhaps this ISN'T a good way to solve the problem?

Having had a look through all the various categories listed, it looks like
the only one that would allow an irish citizen to register a domain name
that wasn't their own name is "Discretionary Name Granted By IEDR". Thanks a
lot guys.

I'm sure there are plenty of people on this and the ILUG list who have an
informed opinion on this - lets hear them. I think it's unfair and
unjustified, how about you?
