Good question!  I wonder what they did.  I guess they could have just
reimplemented using the API though...  it certainly is compatible though,
and works better.

That'd be nice alright. Those 3d cards are still pretty pricey though;
every time I hear of a good entry-level one it seems to disappear out of
the shops replaced by the Next Big Thing.  Those STL (?) cards mentioned
as being available in Dixon's recently on the list are an example; they're
now out of stock.

Also running in software is damn fast == speed advantage on a LAN ;)
