If you're in the market for a standalone DVD player, you should look at the
one from Scan - lower end of the market, but reputedly better than the
Wharfedale and cheaper AND it plays CDs full of MP3s. The web site also says
that "The SC-2000 also works with RCE protected Region 1". I don't know what
that means, but I'd hazard a guess that there are now Region 1 discs which
are able to detect if they're on a region-unlocked player and refuse to
play, in a similar manner to the way in which some new Playstation games
won't play on mod chipped (effectively "region unlocked") Playstations.
