[ILUG-Social] Laptop LCD backlight failure

Anyone know anything about laptop LCD backlights. It would seem mine is gone
(not sure if its something on the motherboard or a failure of something in
the panel itself -- but I'm pretty sure its not a software "issue").

Before I crack open my (otherwise perfectly functioning) laptop does anyone
know if these backlights are replaceable parts (probably not) or if there are
any tricks to make the LCD more visible in the absence of a backlight.

Been getting a bit of a pain in my back from lugging around a 15" CRT in my
coat pocket over the last few days :)
