GPS receiver (was Re: [ILUG-Social] POTY)

Actually I do believe it is better than that, I just didn't have the
figures off the top of my head... so I made a conservative guess -- I
didn't want any ILUG geeks sueing me because they wandered onto the
wrong side of the road while instrumentation driving.
EGNOS info here:
http://www.esa.int/export/esaSA/navigation.html
There should be links there to the US WAAS system.
BTW: EGNOS/WAAS relies on a geostationary satellite for diff signal.
The higher the latitude the lower this sat is on the horizon... so
you can't always rely on it, especially in mountainous/woody terrain.
On a slightly OT... I don't know if anyone has seen any of these
predictions about the earth mag field reversal. The consequence of
this is quite dire: Not only do compasses cease to function, but the
GPS satellites are likely to be fried by radiation. I'm not sure how
we are going to navigate ... Sextants?? .. or a revival or the LORAN
and DECCA radio beacons? Scary.
