I didn't see any quotes or referances. Paraphrasing news organisations
to back up a point is of little use when dealing with matters dealing
with actual facts.

The "quote" was either incorrect or the person "quoted" was incorrect.

Tip: If somebody disputes a fact in a point you're making, look the fact
up on the web if possible. It really wasn't hard to find out what the
story was.
