[Webdev] How do I promote one frame from a link in another?

Hey folks, I have a browser interface displaying 2 frames: leftframe(navigation)
and rightframe(mainframe). Using a button or href in the leftframe
I want to be able to promote the rightframe to the top, closing
the left frame, leaving only the rightframe in the browser window.
This is easy if you know the url of the page in the rightframe
but I want to be able to promote any page in the rightframe.

Has anybody any ideas, links to javascript or herhaps a perl
file or something?
