My company is planning on releasing a new website in the next few months.
Our inhouse designer has done a lot of work preparing the design for it. She
now wants to work with a developer to implement the design. I have been
volunteered for the job (couple of mornings to take me away from
Anyway, I would like some recommendations for tools to use. The designer is
using Windows 2k so portable apps are good (not solely Linux based... if
possible). I have worked with HTML in the past but not recently (and not as
a fulltime job) but am happy that I can quickly come back up to speed with
- Want to use templates/style sheets as much as possible (to keep down
development time and make site easy to maintain), so would like a tool to
aid in this.
- Want the generated code to be fast (not bloat ware)... am happy to write
it by hand but would like handy tool to use for this (i.e. something like
Intellij in java (for those who may have come across it)).
- Want a tool to handle the website as a whole (i.e. update links when
moving webpages, show the website as a whole etc). I think programs like MS
Frontpage used to do this.
- Having the tools GPL would be nice... no point paying out big bucks for
half decent s/w.
- Generated pages should be multi-browser compatible (but I think that's
more for me to do... in making sure the HTML etc is portable).
I know there are comercial tools like Frontpage, DreamWeaver out there but
my Linux side is shying away from using anything like that! Personally I
like the Mozilla for putting together a quick webpage or two.
I hope this doesn't offend all the full time web-developers out there. I
know there's more to the job than just knowing a bit of HTML. ;-)
My aim of this it to keep the initial development time to a minimum and also
to ensure that there is a decent set of tools for future use (by me... or
someone else, maybe the designer) to the keep the website up to date and
